The Deep

The UK’s finest, fish-friendly Aquarium

The Deep is a public aquarium situated at Sammy’s Point, where the River Hull meets the Humber estuary. Billed as “the world’s only submarium”, the Deep’s tanks contain thousands of fish and sea creatures including seven species of shark. The iconic building was designed by Sir Terry Farrell and built as part of the UK National Lottery’s Millennium Scheme.

We were commissioned by The Deep to create a fully integrated package of media programmes, designed to work alongside the tanks to offer visitors an exciting exploration of the world’s oceans. The programmes included a total of 24 touchscreen interactives, 2 immersive interactive games, and 32 single and multi-screen video installations. The programmes provided an opportunity to take visitors beyond the restrictions of the tanks and into some of the least accessible parts of the oceans, from the depths of the Atlantic ocean trenches to the chilly waters of the Arctic and Antarctic.

The Deep’s introductory video, which introduces the main characteristics of each of the World’s oceans, can be seen below, as can some screens from the touchscreen interactives and an image of DB1, a virtual submarine which visitors can pilot into the depths on a futuristic research mission.
